Board Member Bios
Thomas F. Cruso
Tom Cruso is President of Cruso Associates, Inc. a fifteen ?year-old financial planning and assest management practice with offices at 123 Maple Avenue, Riverhead, NY. His firm specializes in comprehensive financial planning, investment portfolio management and retirement planning. His professional designations include Chartered Financial Consultant, Chartered Life Underwriter and Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter; he is also a Registered Securities Principal.
Prior to establishing Cruso Associates, Inc., he was an officer of the Allstate Insurance Company. As Regional Vice-President of Long Island he was responsible for the overall management of the sales, underwriting and claims functions for Queens, Nassau and Suffolk. Under his leadership he developed and implemented sweeping changes that resulted in major breakthroughs in the financial performance and internal cultural behavior of Allstate?s 1800 Long Island employees. Throughout his career with Allstate, Cruso held a variety of marketing management and strategic planning positions in the Northeast and in Allstate?s corporate headquarters in Northbrook, Illinois.
Cruso has served the community as a member of the Board of Directors of United Way of Long Island, was Chairman from 1993 through 1997 and 2003 through 2007. He was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Long Island Association Health Alliance, a member of the Long Island Association of Board of Directors and is a mentor to students at Stony Brook University. He has also served on the Boards of the Long Island Philharmonic, St. Joseph?s College and the New York Motor Vehicle Accident Indemnification Corporation.
A native New Yorker, Cruso is a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University. He and his wife Pat are the parents of two adult children and reside in Aquebogue. His hobbies include the arts, cooking and golf and travel.
Elias (Lou) S. Kalogeras Bio
Elias (Lou) S. Kalogeras is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of New York. He is married with six (6) children and step-children and ten (10) grandchildren and has lived in the Town of Riverhead for over 25 years. He has been a principal in large, medium and small engineering and heavy construction firms for over 50 years and presently operates a small consulting engineering practice in the Town of Riverhead. Lou is a past president of the Riverhead Rotary Club and has been on the Rotary Board of Directors from 2004 through 2010. Lou also belongs to the Riverhead Moose Lodge, is a member of the American Legion and various technical and professional organizations. He retired from the U.S. Army as a Captain in the Corps of Engineers Reserves and also is a certified Fallout Shelter Analyst.
Paul Thompson Bio
Paul Thompson has devoted his life as third generation in the Security System Industry helping people protect their valuables and lives. Paul?s grandfather began Thompson Signal Devices in 1917 when the alarm and security industry was in its infancy. Paul was involved in the business since he was a young boy and now operates East End Sales for Intelli-Tec Security Services, a large security company with a personal touch. . Paul is a Captain licensed by the US Coast Guard. Paul has been summering on Eastern Long Island since he was a young boy, spending his free time fishing, crabbing, clamming and scalloping. From the pull of his Roots, it forced him to make Riverhead his permanent year round residence which provides him peace and comfort. Paul is married to Vanie Tuthill and has four children and two grandchildren between them. Committed to supporting local organizations Paul has been involved with Make A Wish Foundation, Suffolk County Police Dept. Toy and Food Drives, Riverhead Rotary, Santa Clause with a Blue Tooth. A community activist, Paul is a Member and Chairperson of Committee?s for Riverhead Rotary, Member of The Suffolk County Police Citizen Alumni Association, Appointed volunteer for Riverhead IDA Board, as well as his involvement in the North Brookhaven Sport Fishing Club and NYS Sport Fishing Federation among others. Returning to his roots he has been involved with the SPAT program to replenish the bays with shellfish program since its inception.
Carl Gabrielsen Bio
Carl Gabrielsen is the owner and CEO of Gabrielsen Farms, LLC, one of Long Islands largest greenhouse operations with over 200,000 sq ft of greenhouses. Gabrielsen Farms supplies flowering plants throughout the Long Island and Metro area. Working to preserve the communitys heritage and adjusting to the times, Gabrielsen recognizes the importance of change. Gabrielsen Farms is currently a growing green greenhouse facility. He uses an integrated pest management system, which has reduced pesticide usage by 90%. He has also initiated a program which recycles water and curtails his energy consumption in half by installing energy saving curtains, high efficiency heaters and smart computers. He fosters these efforts by recruiting high school students to work collaboratively on data collection as part of the integrated pest management program. With farming legacy that dates back to the 1800s, his goal is to help other greenhouse facilities and farming operations become more sustainable.
Gabrielsen serves the community in a number of capacities including, being a member of the Suffolk County Planning Commission, Long Island Farm Bureau and the Ohio Florist Association. He is a Co-Founder of the Forget Me Not Foundation and has raised funds for needy children, while also sponsoring St. Judes Children Hospital. He has been a member of the NYS Mentoring Program for underprivileged children, volunteered in soup kitchens and has raised funds for autism foundations.
Gabrielsen extensive past professional experience as corporate sales manager and grower for the Jamesport Flower Shop, real estate investment throughout New York, building construction on Eastern Long Island, and hay farming in upstate New York brings a sundry knowledge to the IDA.
He currently resides in the Hamlet of Northville with his wife and children.
